Backpacking wok.... 鑊

Many moons ago I bought a backpacking wok off the big auction site. It was terrific! The curved sides made cleaning easy, and could cook or boil anything in it that I wanted to.

The only downsides were a little more weight and not having a stable base to set it on. I solved the instability by placing three fist sized rocks on the ground and using those as a tripod of sorts.

If memory serves me right it was between 10 and 12 inches in diameter.

I ended up giving it away to a friendly backpacker I met in Joshua Tree National Park.

I have done some searching, but I can't seem to find something similar enough to justify giving it a try.

Anyone know where I can find one? It must have a long handle, not two short ones.

This is the second day in a row I've randomly intercepted a blog about outdoor wokking. Must be a wave in the collective unconscious....

Anyway, I mentioned to the guy yesterday that a Dakota fire pit would putting a wok over just to see if it works. Saves fuel, concentrates heat, you could make it just the right size.

I cook for a living and I've been wanting a nice wok for a while anyway. Good carbon steel, not that teflonated techno crap. Guess I need to go do some research.

Thats odd! A wok is worth it's weight in gold! Just about the most versatile pan in the kitchen. Thanks for dropping in.

I live near San Francisco. In Chinatown they sell real woks, made of steel. We have and use ours just about everyday. Best cooking pan you can have. The one I use in the kitchen are the big ones,12-14", but they have 8-10" ones, wooden handles. Next time I'm in SF I'll check on prices. My big ones were only like $8, of course I bought them 30 years ago.

The Wok Shop in SF is online and is one of the places I was thinking would have what your looking for. http://www.wokshop.com/HTML/products/woks/wok-our-hand-hammered.html.

Hello

I was wondering if you have found any good woks yet. I'm looking too, but the only woks I've found are aluminum. I was thinking of just getting a nice carbon steel one and cutting off the handle and using it for backpacking.

Ps. I'm from Boise too (currently at BSU; I work for the outdoor program and am the president of the outsider's club), and I am really interested in bow hunting, but I have never hunted before nor do I know anything about it. Do you have any info as to how to get started?

Thanks,
Chema
